Islamic New Year Mubarak: Hijri New Year Wishes & Duas

Wishes, duas and gentle reminders for the start of Muharram, when a new Hijri year begins. Choose from Roman Urdu or English messages to send to family and friends.

When does the Islamic New Year begin?

The Hijri year begins on 1 Muharram, and the calendar is counted from the Hijrah, when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated from Makkah to Madinah. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, the date moves about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year.

Tips

Many people mark the start of Muharram quietly with duas rather than as a celebration, so a simple dua is always a safe choice. For many families Muharram is also a month of remembrance and mourning, especially around Ashura, so keep your message calm. Adding the person's name makes it feel personal.
