““ Core Beliefs All of us have core beliefs that influence our behavior and how we feel about ourselves. Often you think of them as an “unwritten law.” You may have developed your beliefs through experience, or they may have come from your parents, your religion, or your culture. Although you may not realize it, your core beliefs are always in your mind and affect everything you do. They are the guidelines according to which you judge everything in your life. When your core beliefs are positive, you are confident and believe you can accomplish great things. Examples of positive core beliefs include: -I am intelligent. -My mistakes are a learning experience. -I believe in myself. When the core beliefs are negative, however, they prevent you from getting what you want from life. Examples of negative core beliefs common in social anxiety include: -I am never going to be successful. -Everyone must like me. -If I am not liked, I am worthless. -I can’t trust anyone. Because negative core beliefs have been such a deep part of your personality, it may take a lot of work to become aware of what they are. As you become more conscious of them, you probably will realize that they are unrealistic, and that are you basing your anxiety on false beliefs.””
