About Raymond Chandler

In 1932, at age 44, he left his job as an oil‑company executive during the Great Depression and began writing detective fiction. His first short story, “Blackmailers Don't Shoot,” appeared in the 1933 pulp magazine Black Mask. His debut novel, The Big Sleep, was published in 1939. He wrote seven novels in total, and all except Playback have been adapted into movies, some more than once.
