During the middle ages, dictator-like religious leaders spread malicious lies that it would subsequently cause blindness, its evil, GOD will condemn you, and so on. And (because of the threat of death) doctors of that time joined the clergy in confirming this scientific nonsense. Surprisingly, the reasoning behind this was that the church wanted its parishioners to have more sex, thus increasing the population of the empire, and the wealth and power of the church itself.
