She was crowned Miss California USA 2009 and later placed as the first runner-up at the Miss USA 2009 pageant. Prejean received widespread national media attention during the Miss USA pageant for her public opposition to same-sex marriage, which culminated in the eventual stripping of her Miss California title over subsequent contractual disputes with the Donald Trump-run organization.
