About Laozi

Laozi is a legendary figure of Chinese philosophy, traditionally named as the author of the Tao Te Ching, a work that stands among the founding texts of Taoism. According to traditional accounts he was born Li Er in the state of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period of the 6th century BC, and served the Zhou court at Wangcheng as royal archivist. Tradition holds that he met Confucius, who was impressed by him, and that he wrote the Dao De Jing in one sitting before withdrawing into the wilderness to the west.

Modern scholars, however, largely treat these biographical details as inventions of later eras, and view the text attributed to him as the product of multiple hands. The name Laozi itself simply means 'Old Master', and may have been chosen to evoke an ancient, anonymous voice in dialogue with Confucianism.
