About Elizabeth von Arnim
She was born in Australia, and many of her early novels are set in Germany. Her first marriage gave her the title Countess von Arnim‑Schlagenthin, and after her first husband died she married Frank Russell, becoming Countess Russell. She had a three‑year affair with writer H. G. Wells. She was a cousin of New Zealand‑born author Katherine Mansfield. Though she was called May in her youth, her first book introduced her as Elizabeth, a name she later used with friends and family.
