““In order to show that not even light can escape from the gravitational pull of a black hole, we have to hone the argument further. Light, as we know, always moves at the same velocity. When it rises against gravity, light, will therefore not slow down. Unlike a bullet, it cannot come to rest and turn around. But by rising it will lose energy and thereby its wavelength will increase. Thus the light becomes dimmer and dimmer-with the result that outside the sphere at which bullets turn around the light cannot be seen anymore. We may therefore conclude that light, just as bullets, cannot leave the gravitational field of a black hole.””

About This Quote

Source Speech: Lecture on Black Hole Physics, 2015

Explains that light cannot escape a black hole because it loses energy and redshifts, similar to a bullet that cannot reverse direction under gravity.

In simple terms: Light cannot leave a black hole due to energy loss.

Key Takeaway

Understand gravity’s effect on light.

Themes

physics astronomy relativity

Mood

When to use this quote

  • lecture
  • science documentary
  • educational video

Key Concepts

event horizon gravitational redshift energy conservation

Questions to Reflect On

  • How does redshift demonstrate energy loss?
  • What limits does this place on observing black holes?
A Different Perspective

The explanation simplifies complex GR concepts, which may mislead without math.
