About Charles de Gaulle

Charles de Gaulle was a French general who led the Free French Forces against Nazi Germany and Vichy France during World War II. After the war he chaired the provisional government from 1944 to 1946, helping restore democracy. In 1958, President René Coty asked him to become Prime Minister after the Algiers putsch. He drafted a new constitution that created the Fifth Republic, and later that year he was elected President of France, a role he kept until his resignation in 1969.
