““He acknowledged that in the muckraking days, he would have shared their anger and quit, but his thinking had changed since the Russian Revolution. “I was sure that it was useless—it was almost wrong—to fight for the right under our system; petty reforms in politics, wars without victories, just peace, were impossible, unintelligent, heroic but immoral,” he wrote. “Either they and we all should labor to change the foundation of society, as the Russians were doing, or go along with the resultant civilization we were part of, taking care only to save our minds by seeing it all straight.””
