““The priestly class of the Sadducees quarreled endlessly with the rabbis of the Pharisee sect. The Sadduccees strictly upheld the original Israelite monotheism of Moses; the Pharisees, in the tradition of Ezra, gave this same monotheism a broader interpretation which took into account the scriptual contributions of all the Biblical prophets, as well as the so-called 'Oral Torah', which was subsequently to provide the basic material for the Talmud.””
