Sexual desire is the most basic manifestation of individualism. In societies where ruling elites maintain as tight a hold over both the public and private lives of their populations as political systems and civil societies allow, sexual repression, and the importance of maintaining the façade of sexual normality (however culturally defined), remain insidious forms of repression. However, Orwell further noted: “What was more important was that sexual privation induced hysteria, which was desirable because it could be transformed into war fever and leader worship.”13””
