This is not to claim that we understand everything that occurred. We do not understand the detailed process by which galaxies formed, but such processes actually exert a negligible influence upon the course of the overall expansion. Prior to one second after the apparent beginning, we are on all together shakier ground. We no longer have direct fossil remnants from the early Universe against which to check the accuracy of our reconstruction of its history.
