"Actually, it is possible. I don't ebemmrer which company (but I think it was progressive) just got nailed with some major stuff over that. They were actually running credit checks on people and using their credit score in part to base what their rates were. And any time someone pulls a credit report on you it has an effect on your score. This is, in fact, an illegal practice but that didn't stop them.While that is unlikely to happen now that whoever it was got bitten by it, that doesn't mean someone else might not be doing it as well"
