““The first major battle of the Valley Campaign was at Kernstown on March 23, 1862. It was a Sunday, and Jackson, a devoutly Christian man, didn’t want to fight on the Sabbath, but he changed his mind when he saw the lay of the land. Not far off from Pritchard’s Hill was Sandy Ridge, which offered a similarly good view of the Valley.
