About Margaret Trudeau
Margaret Joan Trudeau, a Canadian activist, is best known as the mother of Justin Trudeau, the country’s 23rd prime minister. She married Pierre Trudeau, who served as Canada’s 15th prime minister, in 1971, three years after he first took office, and they divorced in 1984 during his final months as prime minister. Margaret is also the mother of journalist and author Alexandre “Sacha” Trudeau, of Michel Trudeau, and of Kyle and Alicia, whose father is Ottawa real‑estate developer Fried Kemper. She made history as the first Canadian woman to have been both the wife and the mother of prime ministers, and she works to support people with bipolar disorder, a condition she herself has.
