About Joe Thornton
He was selected first overall by the Bruins in the 1997 NHL entry draft and spent seven seasons with the team, three as captain. In the 2005‑06 season he was traded to the San Jose Sharks, and that year he earned the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s leading point‑scorer and the Hart Memorial Trophy as most valuable player, becoming the only player to win either award while playing for multiple teams. Thornton then played fourteen more seasons with the Sharks, serving as captain for four years and reaching the 2016 Stanley Cup Finals. He was the last active NHL player and the last major North American sports athlete who had played in the 1990s.
