About Hannah More

Hannah More was an English writer, philanthropist, poet and playwright who wrote on moral and religious subjects. Born in Bristol, she taught at the school her father founded and began writing plays. She moved in the circles of Samuel Johnson, Joshua Reynolds and David Garrick, becoming a leading member of the London Bluestocking movement. Her later plays and poetry took on a more evangelical tone, and she joined the Clapham Sect, a group that opposed the Atlantic slave trade.
