About William Osler
Sir William Osler, the 1st Baronet, was a Canadian doctor and one of the “Big Four” professors who started Johns Hopkins Hospital. He launched the first residency program for physician specialty training and is often called the Father of Modern Medicine. Osler loved books, wrote about medical history, and was known for practical jokes. He founded the History of Medicine Society in London, helped start the Medical Library Association of Great Britain and Ireland and the Association of Medical Librarians, and donated his personal medical history collection to McGill University, where it became the Osler Library.
