About William Jennings Bryan

William Jennings Bryan was a prominent American lawyer, speaker, and politician. He was a leading figure in the Democratic Party and was nominated for President in 1896, 1900, and 1908. Bryan served in the House of Representatives from 1891 to 1895 and was secretary of state under President Woodrow Wilson from 1913 to 1915. People called him the Great Commoner because he trusted ordinary people's wisdom, and his nickname Boy Orator for his powerful speeches as a young candidate.
