About Shimon Peres
He joined twelve different cabinets and was part of five political parties during a career that lasted about 70 years. Peres first entered the Knesset in November 1959 and, aside from a brief three‑month break in early 2006, served there continuously until becoming president in 2007. When he left politics in 2014 he was the world’s oldest head of state and was seen as the last living link to Israel’s founding generation, as well as the final prime minister who had immigrated to the country rather than being born on the land that became Israel.
