About Rudy Giuliani
He served as U.S. Associate Attorney General from 1981 to 1983 and as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1983 to 1989, where he led federal prosecutions of mafia bosses. After an unsuccessful mayoral run in 1989, he was elected mayor in 1993 and re‑elected in 1997 on a “tough on crime” platform, appointing William Bratton as police commissioner. He ran for the U.S. Senate in 2000 against Hillary Clinton but withdrew after a prostate‑cancer diagnosis. Following the September 11 attacks, he was called “America’s mayor” and named Time Person of the Year for 2001.
