About Matthew Arnold
He was the son of Thomas Arnold, the headmaster of Rugby School, and brother to literary professor Tom Arnold and novelist William Delafield Arnold. He was known as a sage writer who warned readers about social problems. For thirty‑five years he inspected schools and advocated for state‑run secondary education.
