Donatien Alphonse François, the Marquis de Sade, was a French writer, libertine, political activist and nobleman. He wrote novels, short stories, plays, dialogues and political tracts. Some of his works were published under his own name while he was alive, but most appeared anonymously or were released after his death. He is best remembered for his libertine novels and for the imprisonments he faced because of sex crimes, blasphemy and pornography.
