About Lord Chesterfield
Lord Chesterfield was a title in the Peerage of England associated with the County of Derby. It was created in 1628 for Philip Stanhope, who had earlier been made Baron Stanhope of Shelford in Nottingham in 1616. Philip’s youngest son, the Hon. Alexander Stanhope, fathered James Stanhope, the 1st Earl Stanhope, while his half‑brother Sir John Stanhope of Elvaston was the great‑grandfather of William Stanhope, the 1st Earl of Harrington.
