About José Saramago
His novels often read as allegories that offer subversive views of historic events, highlighting the human element. In 2003 Harold Bloom called him the most gifted novelist alive, and in 2010 said he would remain a permanent part of the Western canon. James Wood notes his distinctive tone, describing his narration as both wise and ignorant.
