About John Milton
His 1667 epic Paradise Lost, written in blank verse and divided into twelve books, tells the story of the fall of man, including Adam and Eve’s temptation by Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. The poem made him one of history’s greatest poets. He also served as a civil servant for the Commonwealth of England under its Council of State and later under Oliver Cromwell.
