About John Locke
Locke’s ideas about toleration say that religion belongs to each person and that churches should be voluntary, preventing forced uniformity. In Two Treatises he argued that governments need the consent of the people and that citizens may revolt if a ruler becomes tyrannical. His writings helped shape the language of the 1776 Declaration of Independence drafted by Thomas Jefferson.
