About E. M. Forster
He also wrote many short stories, essays, speeches, broadcasts, biographies and pageant plays. His 1909 short story “The Machine Stops” is often seen as the start of technological dystopian fiction. He co‑authored the libretto for Benjamin Britten’s opera Billy Budd in 1951. His novels examine class differences and hypocrisy, and his humanist views are central to his work.
