About Aung San Suu Kyi
She has been the general secretary of the National League for Democracy since it was founded in 1988 and served as its chairperson while the party was legal from 2011 to 2023. During the 2010s she helped move Myanmar from a military junta toward a partial democracy, and many people called her the de facto leader of the country from 2016 to 2021.
