After Belleau Wood, the corps commander who had faced the attackers arrived at a reappraisal: “The 2nd American Division can be rated a very good Division. . . . The various attacks of the marines were carried out smartly and ruthlessly. The morale effect of our fire did not materially check the advance of the infantry. The nerves of the Americans are still unshaken.””
