About José Rizal
He is popularly regarded as a national hero of the Philippines, though no official decree naming him as such exists. Rizal trained as an ophthalmologist and used his writing to push for political reforms. In the 1880s he joined the Filipino Propaganda Movement, a group that sought changes to Spanish colonial policies.
