About Gautama Buddha

Gautama Buddha, born Siddhartha Gautama and usually called simply the Buddha, was a wandering ascetic and spiritual teacher active in the eastern Indo-Gangetic Plains sometime in the sixth or fifth century BCE. He is the founder of Buddhism. Buddhist legend places his birth in Lumbini, in present-day Nepal, as the child of royal parents belonging to the Shakya clan, a privileged life he gave up to become a wandering ascetic.

After years spent in mendicancy, austere practice, and meditation, he is said to have reached nirvana at Bodh Gaya, in the region that is now Bihar, India. He then traveled across the lower Indo-Gangetic Plain, sharing his teaching and establishing the sangha, a monastic community. According to Buddhist tradition, he died at Kushinagar, where he attained parinirvana.
