Rita Dove explains a poet laureate’s duties, such as running a reading series at the Library of Congress and advising the librarian. She urges writers to read a lot and listen to poems, because a brief pause can make us think about ourselves and each other. She also mentions the thrill of a poem that clears the mind, like clouds parting and a burst of joy.
