Thomas Jefferson writes that he sees no redeeming quality in orthodox Christianity and calls it a superstition that makes many people foolish. He notes that some passages about Jesus show fine imagination and moral ideas, yet he still doubts their truth. He also opposes any tyranny that tries to control the mind, insisting that free thought should stay independent of religious rule.
