Few scientists acquainted with the chemistry of biological systems at the molecular level can avoid being inspired. Evolution has produced chemical compounds exquisitely organized…

“We view the world on a molecular level. The building blocks, not the end results.”

— Susan Mallery

Studying organisms at a molecular level was totally compelling because it was moving from being a naturalist, which was the 19th-century kind of science,…

— Elizabeth Blackburn

“They know him at molecular level. He lives in them like chains of matter that determine who they are.”

— Don DeLillo

There's that effect that is very physical, very down there at the synaptic level, which really means microscopic cellular level, but also molecular level,…

— Antonio Damasio

Biological engineering is not necessarily understanding systems but rather, I want to be able to design and build biological systems to perform particular applications.

— Drew Endy

“I think that the people that say we will never develop computer intelligence — they merely prove that some biological systems don't have much intelligence.”

— Arthur C. Clarke

It's so hard to figure out what's going on in biological systems. You just can't see them.

— Erez Lieberman Aiden

Evolutionary biologists have been able to pretend to know how complex biological systems originated only because they treated them as black boxes. Now that…

— Phillip E. Johnson

“Hierarchical organization in biological systems thus is characterized by an exquisite array of delicately and intricately interlocked order, steadily increasing in level and complexity…

— Clifford Grobstein

“Thanks to our growing understanding of human biology, medicine can keep us alive long enough for our minds and ‘authentic selves’ to disintegrate and…

— Yuval Noah Harari

I had been impressed by the fact that biological systems were based on molecular machines and that we were learning to design and build…

— K. Eric Drexler

If you're dealing with an assembly of biological systems, you can bring the things together, but you can't connect them.

— Bill Mollison

“I’m not really an epidemiologist, if that’s what you mean. It’s outside my area. I build mathematical models based on biological systems.”

— Andrew Mayne

As the number of unexplained, irreducibly complex biological systems increases, our confidence that Darwin's criterion of failure has been met skyrockets toward the maximum…
