About William O. Douglas
William O. Douglas was an American jurist who served as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1939 until 1975. Nominated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, he was confirmed at age 40, making him one of the youngest justices. He was known for strong progressive and civil libertarian views and is often called the most liberal justice in the court’s history. He served for 36 years and 209 days, the longest tenure of any U.S. Supreme Court justice.
