About Eric Hoffer

Eric Hoffer came from a working‑class background and became a noted American philosopher and social critic. Over his career he authored ten books, including the widely praised The True Believer (1951). He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in February 1983. Hoffer considered his later work The Ordeal of Change (1963) his finest. An international literary prize, the Eric Hoffer Book Award, and a Berkeley literary prize bear his name.
