“the fetal brain generates far more neurons than are found in the adult.” — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share Image
The frontal cortex is an incredibly interesting part of the brain - ours is proportionately bigger and/or more complex than in any… — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share Image
Genes are rarely about inevitability, especially when it comes to humans, the brain, or behavior. They're about vulnerability, propensities, tendencies. — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share Image
“Knowledge emerged about synapses, neurotransmitter-ology was born, and this idea was modified—a new memory requires the formation of a new synapse, a… — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share Image
On an incredibly simplistic level, you can think of depression as occurring when your cortex thinks an abstract thought and manages to… — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share Image
Perhaps most excitingly, we are uncovering the brain basis of our behaviors - normal, abnormal and in-between. We are mapping a neurobiology… — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share Image
Genes are important for understanding our behavior. Incredibly important - after all, they code for every protein pertinent to brain function, endocrinology,… — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share Image
The fascinating thing about our best and worst behaviors isn't the behavior itself - the brain tells the muscles to do something… — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share Image
“And their brains? Decreased total brain size, gray matter, white matter, frontal cortical metabolism, connectivity between regions, sizes of individual brain regions.… — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share Image
Brains distinguish between an Us and a Them in a fraction of a second. Subliminal processing of a Them activates the amygdala… — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share Image
“The sensory cortex and visual cortex are far away from each other. How do those tactile neurons “know” (a) that there’s vacant… — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share Image
“The subject is also fascinating because of the nature of the revisionism—neuroplasticity radiates optimism. Books on the topic are entitled The Brain… — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share Image
“Remarkably, the size of neurons’ dendritic trees in the hippocampus expands and contracts like an accordion throughout a female rat’s ovulatory cycle,… — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share Image
“The brain is heavily influenced by genes. But from birth through young adulthood, the part of the human brain that most defines… — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share Image
“Secure-attachment 7Rs show more generosity than average. Thus 7R has something to do with generosity—but its effect is entirely context dependent.” — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share
But if you get chronically, psychosocially stressed, you're going to compromise your health. So, essentially, we've evolved to be smart enough to make ourselves… — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share
“Finally, for the same criminal conviction, the more stereotypically Af-rican a black individual’s facial features, the longer the sentence.15 In contrast, juries view black… — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share
“So testosterone does subtle things to behavior. Nonetheless, this doesn’t tell us much because everything can be interpreted every which way. Testosterone increases anxiety—you… — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share
“pain makes aggressive people more aggressive, while doing the opposite to unaggressive individuals.” — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share
“Thus, for our purposes, genes aren’t about inevitability. Instead they’re about context-dependent tendencies, propensities, potentials, and vulnerabilities. All embedded in the fabric of the… — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share
“If we accept that there will always be sides, it’s a nontrivial to-do list item to always be on the side of angels. Distrust… — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share
“In other words, the more genomically complex the organism, the larger the percentage of the genome devoted to gene regulation by the environment.” — Robert M. Sapolsky Copy Share
